Tips To Help A Loved One Adjust To Moving Into An Assisted Living Facility

by Joe Dixon

Growing older brings wisdom and life experience, but it also means that a person can reach the point where he or she can no longer live alone. If you have an elderly loved one who is struggling with managing his or her own home and taking care of one's self, a move into an assisted living facility may be the best option. However, giving up a home and moving into an assisted living facility is something that many older senior citizens struggle with. It can be hard to come to the realization that one has reached a point in his or her life where completely independent living is coming to an end. Use the following tips to help your loved one adjust to moving in to an assisted living facility.

Make Your Loved One a Part of the Selection Process

When you begin looking at assisted living facilities for a loved one, make it a point to involve him or her in the process. A person can have a much easier time moving into an assisted living facility if he or she gets to have a say in where he or she will be living. It can be helpful to review the websites of different assisted living facilities with your loved one, and ask for his or her opinion. It is also a good idea to bring your loved one with you when you tour different assisted living facilities so you can ask for input and opinions.

Create a Homey Space

After an assisted living facility is selected for your loved one, it can be very helpful to help him or her set up his or her bedroom to be as homey and comfortable as possible. For many older senior citizens, bringing personal items from their old home can be very helpful. Having their own pillows, bedding, and decor items can help make their new room at an assisted living facility feel safe and secure and evoke feelings of being in the house they previously lived in.

Don't Forget to Visit

Moving into an assisted living facility is a big step for an elderly person, and it may take him or her time to feel comfortable and form relationships and friendships with the other residents. Thus, it is really important to make time to visit your loved one in his or her new home. Doing so is sure to brighten your loved one's day and help prevent any feelings of abandonment.
