How To Access Skilled Nursing Services

by Joe Dixon

As people age, they tend to need more medical care and assistance during daily activities. Going to the doctor constantly can get costly and time-consuming. Registered nurses can provide many of the medical treatments that seniors need on a daily basis. If you need skilled nursing services, there are a few options available to you. Here are three different solutions you can use:

1. Home Care

Living at home is the easiest option for many seniors. Staying home means you don't have to worry about moving, and you can take comfort from the familiarity around you. People who live near family members may not want to move. If living alone at home is proving challenging and detrimental to your health, you can hire a skilled nurse to assist you. Skilled nursing care is provided by registered nurses who are licensed to perform various medical procedures. They can offer basic wound care, administer pills and injections, and even draw blood for testing purposes.

2. Assisted Living

Assisted living facilities can be very helpful for people who are unable to perform the tasks necessary for daily life. Assisted living eases the burden on residents while still providing them with plenty of freedom. Skilled nursing isn't standard in assisted living facilities, but it can be provided upon request. Just as you can hire a skilled nurse to take care of you at home, you can pay for skilled nursing care in an assisted living facility. If you choose to live in an assisted living facility, you will only have access to skilled nursing care when your nurse is on duty. This is a good compromise for people with occasional medical needs who do not require medical care 24 hours a day.

3. Nursing Home

Nursing homes are more expensive than other assisted living facilities because they provide an enhanced level of care. Residents living in nursing homes will have access to skilled nursing services around the clock. This can be important for anyone living with a medical condition that makes their health very fragile. In a nursing home, residents with cognitive deficits due to illness or dementia can be supervised as necessary. A nursing home can give residents and family members peace of mind. You'll never have to worry about having an emergency in the middle of the night and being unable to get care because registered nurses will be on hand to assist you.
